biography

Oz Barak is a Tel Aviv–based photographer whose work explores the tension between life and death, beauty and pain. Within these contrasts, he searches for a sense of balance between suffering and relief. His images are visually bold and contrast-driven, combining vivid colours and dramatic lighting.

Conceptually, Oz’s photography delves into the emotional challenges of human existence, such as struggle, melancholy, and mortality, while celebrating vitality and a strong presence.
His search for this balance is rooted in his own life experiences and struggle.
Much of his perspective comes from years spent in and out of hospitals, recovering, observing, and learning what it means to live alongside pain. Being a patient, alongside others who were also struggling shaped his belief in mutual responsibility and accountability.

These experiences inform his view of portraiture as a fundamentally collaborative act, one that extends naturally into his practice. Through intuitive collaboration with his subjects, he seeks moments of raw connection, openness, and honesty, where vulnerability becomes the source of strength and beauty.

By presenting difficult emotions through striking visual beauty, Oz invites viewers to confront discomfort, to recognise that life and death coexist and that it’s okay to feel it all.
